I’m putting together a series of hands-on robotics labs for children aged 6-9. The idea is to let them assemble simple wheeled robots that can pick, stack and build miniature structures out of custom-cut wooden pieces. The lessons must feel like play, yet still introduce real industrial concepts such as grippers, vacuum pumps, and basic machine vision.

Scope of work
The core activity revolves around a pick-and-place challenge. Young learners feed wooden blocks onto a mat; the robot, guided by an onboard camera, detects the block’s colour and shape, then decides where to place it in a pre-defined structure. Colour detection and shape recognition are the only vision features we need—keep everything else hidden so the kids stay focused on the “magic” rather than the code.

I already have access to small DC-motor bases and Raspberry Pi-compatible cameras. Where I need help is in translating those parts into an engaging, classroom-ready package:

• Step-by-step build guide for a child-safe wheeled robot, including 3D printable or laser-cut mounts for grippers and a miniature vacuum pump.
• CAD or vector files for the wooden pieces so I can outsource the cutting.
• Python (or Scratch-friendly) scripts that handle colour & shape recognition, plus a simple state machine for stacking logic.
• A teacher’s booklet that explains what grippers and vacuum pumps do in industry and shows how to demonstrate them safely at kid scale.
• Short demo video or GIFs proving that a single robot can pick, identify and accurately place at least three differently shaped, differently coloured blocks.

Acceptance criteria
1. A child with no prior experience can follow the illustrated guide and assemble the robot in under one hour with minimal adult assistance.
2. Vision system correctly distinguishes at least three colours and two distinct shapes in typical classroom lighting.
3. Robot completes a three-block stack autonomously without human intervention.
4. All materials, code and graphics are supplied in editable formats.
