Risk Assessment

Job ID: 33498247

Budget: £10 – £20 GBP

“Risk assessment is a key tool in the armoury against invasive non-native species. It is a vital part of any comprehensive prevention strategy.” (GB-NNSS)

Risk assessments (RAs) are used to aid prioritisation, enable effective rapid responses and for underpinning decision-making. RAs are routinely carried out by experts on invasive species, and then peer-reviewed and published by the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (Links to an external site.) (GB-NNSS) for more information).

The objective of this assignment is to complete an official non-native organism risk assessment for an invasive non-native species to give you a unique, first-hand experience of performing an RA. Sections of your RA might be challenging due to lack of data, but this reflects the realities of the RA exercise.

You will be completing a RAPID RISK ASSESSMENT as opposed to a FULL RISK ASSESSMENT. Rapid RAs are used to assess invasive non-native species more rapidly than the larger GB Non-native Risk Assessment. The principles remain the same, relying on scientific knowledge of the species, expert judgement and peer review. For some species the rapid assessment alone is sufficient, others may go on to be assessed under the larger scheme if requested by the Non-native Species Programme Board.

What species can we choose from?

Choose one species from the list below for your Rapid Risk Assessment (RRA)**. Some of the species might be in the UK, others are not. None of the species have completed Risk Assessments for the UK, but they are featured in the “100 of the worst” list in the EU project "Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe (Links to an external site.)" (DAISIE).

Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito)
Bemisia tabaci (whitefly)
Cameraria ohridella (Horse chestnut leaf miner)
Ceratitis capitata (Mediterranean fruit fly)
Diabrotica virgifera (Western corn rootworm)
Gyrodactylus salaris (Salmon fluke)
Neogobius melanostomus (Round goby)
Heracleum mantegazzianum syn. giganteum (Giant hogweed)
