write a report to perspective surveyors in order to introduce them to the role. This report is required to cover:
• Trends – identify and discuss trends observed over the past ten-year period in the number of ships, ship
type and ship size included in the global fleet, including identifying global factors influencing these
trends.
• Roles – choose three interested parties involved in the classification or statutory control of ships, of
which one must be a classification society, and outline (in general terms) their role and responsibility in
the marine industry.
• Survey situations – a surveyor has been requested to perform a pre-purchase survey of a Very Large
Crude Carrier (VLCC). The scope of survey includes the Cargo Pump Room. This space has been declared safe for entry and a Permit to Work has been issued by the Safety Officer. When the surveyors reaches the bottom plates they find that a large volume of oil is present due to leaks from the cargo pump seals. The vessel must depart from the current oil terminal in one hour’s time. Only the Cargo Pump Room (which is a confined space) remains to be inspected. Explain how the surveyor should deal with this situation.
• Reporting – surveyors have to produce high quality reports. Outline a report template, such as would be provided to the client for the pre-purchase survey of the VLCC outlined above. (Note this is a template and you are not required to provide precise information for the survey, just demonstrate the ability to structure, professionally lay out and format a report document.) Include within this template the specific sections, headings and sub headings that would be required, together with a general description of the type of information which should be include in each part of the report.
