Teach me about Bloom's Taxonomy

I need someone to give me an in depth rundown on how Bloom's Taxonomy works and how it can be used by students (not just teachers) to help them achieve a better understanding of critical thinking and evaluation. I am planning to do this as a subject for a Phd thesis. Much appreciated.
