Research: companies and industries which have been disrupted
Budget: £20 – £250 GBP
I am writing a book on how industries and companies are disrupted by changes in technology, economics, politics and other factors.
In order to do this, I want to have a long list of good examples of companies which were huge but were disrupted; of industries which were huge but were disrupted; of
The most famous example (which I don’t need to know more about) is Kodak. They were huge in the 80s and 90s but when digital cameras and smartphones appeared, they lost their market share.
Kodak thought they were a “chemical company” - everything they did was about processing chemicals for analogue photographs. The disruption was that digital cameras made all those chemicals pointless.
Another example is the Music Industry which shipped CDs until the internet came along with the iPod and streaming.
This is the kind of disruption I am interested in.
What I’m looking for:
- Large companies that have failed
- Industries which countries have relied on which have ended (e.g. the cotton fabric industry in the UK)
- Industries where the method of providing the service has changed - for example, the music industry which was previously: CDs/records; and is now: streaming/YouTube
I need some good, authoritative sources on this. I will read everything that you research in detail, so I need very good, authoritative sources.
You should have good awareness of the ideas of disruption, of economics, technology and how these relate.
This is probably going to be a really fun project :)
Output
Put each lead into a Google sheet (which will be provided)
- Select “research location”
- Title: Enter the title of the book / web page / paper; the name of the person. Whatever is appropriate.
- Summary. Copy or write a summary.
- URL
- Industries. The industries that are concerned (where appropriate)
- Geographies. The countries/regions in the world that are concerned (where appropriate)
- Date. An approximate date. This might be a range (e.g. 1950s-1960s) or even a century (e.g. 1800s)
- Notes. Is there anything remarkable? Any more research which should be done?
A research checklist will also be provided
