AR/VR/MR Immersive Tech Platforms & Marketplaces: Research Brief

Job ID: 33164482

Budget: £250 – £750 GBP

Research hypothesis: To what extent are AR/VR experiences driving consumers back to brands and away from multi-sided marketplaces?

We are curious to uncover the impact that immersive tech is having on consumer and brand engagement – how are consumers and brands interacting with AR/VR/MR platforms? Is immersive tech prompting consumers and brand preferences to shift away from scalable, distributed networks of transactions through multi-sided marketplaces – moving them towards custom, verticalized, brand-led experiences?

Context: We are a Ventures studio focused on innovation and R&D within the domain of digital marketplaces (platforms which connect buyers and sellers through an online storefront). With the growing prominence of immersive technologies (AR/VR/MR) as an edge area for increased start-up activity and innovation, we are interested in exploring the impact of this technology vertical on consumer and brand engagement within the wider platform and marketplace ecosystem.

Research Brief:
The immersive tech vertical is gaining significant momentum with technology giants, start-ups, and other niche players investing heavily in the infrastructure required to shape the art of the possible in this landscape (e.g Meta, Microsoft, Snap inc., Microsoft, Roblox, Decentraland, MetaVRse, Unity etc). Additionally, many consumer brands have started to shift their strategies to enable experimentation with of immersive tech for a variety of different consumer and brand activation use cases (e.g Disney, Hyundai, Nike, Gucci etc.).
As the markteplaces and e-commerce industry starts to adopt this tech, new use-cases are emerging such as: (virtual try-on solutions and shopping assistants, unique unboxing experiences, product preview placement, interactive user manuals, and social media filters). Some examples of brands engaging with this technology include: Dior, Burrow, Ikea, Netflix, Gucci, H&M, Adidas and much more)
Due to the relatively early maturity of this technology ecosystem, different business models (e.g B2B, B2C and Web 3.0) are gaining different degrees of traction and adoption, generating a range of new possibilities for customers and businesses to collaborate, experience, interact, advertise, promote, and transact across several product offerings, industry verticals and use cases. Some of these include: learning and development, training and simulation, customer engagement, brand activation, advertising, gaming, real-estate, architecture, home development/refurbishment, retail, fashion (try before you buy), manufacturing, health-tech and more.
