Paper Structure
1. Introduction
a. Identify your topic
b. Pose the question/problem that your paper will answer. You can actually write it out as a question if you
want.
c. Provide your thesis (it should be a direct answer/solution to your question/problem). A good thesis should
have the following characteristics:
1. Clear – it is easy to understand when read (the reader should be able to “get” your argument without
too much struggle).
2. Debatable – the thesis is not a statement of fact, but rather an argument that someone can disagree
with.
3. Precise – the thesis provides only one answer/solution to the question/problem posed. Your thesis
should not list out 3 or 4 arguments (or supporting arguments to your main claim).
4. Specific – explain how or why your thesis works. For example, don’t just write “Fall is the best season!”
Rather explain why, ie “Fall is the best season because it’s the only time you can drink delicious
pumpkin-spiced lattes!”
d. Explain why your thesis is important – what do we learn from your thesis, beyond the thesis itself? What
does your thesis reveal about the history in question?
e. Briefly explain or describe how you will support your thesis in the rest of the paper.
2. Body Paragraphs.
a. Create a topic sentence for each body paragraph that either identifies or summaries the main argument or
idea of the paragraph.
b. Sometimes, topic sentences need to transition between a previous argument to a new argument; or from
one section of a paper to a new section. In this case, write a topic sentence that makes the transition while
simultaneously introducing the new argument/idea of the paragraph.
c. Make sure each body paragraph has only one idea or argument.
d. Explain the argument/idea in depth or in detail.
e. If you are including quotations from a primary source, then explain how/why your quotation supports the
idea of the paragraph.
f. If there is an obvious counterargument to the argument in your paragraph, identify it, then explain why the
counterargument does not invalidate the argument of the paragraph.
g. The body paragraphs should work together as much as possible to support your thesis. In other words, don’t
just list out arguments that support your thesis. Rather, explain how two or more of the arguments can work
together to support your thesis in a third way (beyond for example how arguments 1 & 2 each in their own
way support your thesis).
3. Conclusion
a. Re-state your question/problem
b. Re-state your thesis
c. Elaborate on why your thesis is significant (if possible beyond what you did in the Intro)
d. End with a question or problem that arises because of your thesis; or a question or problem that is adjacent to
your thesis, and which if answered would provide even more insight/knowledge of the history in question. In
other words, given the knowledge that your thesis conveys, what would be the next step (or problem or
question) that needs to be answered to move knowledge forward.
