Byzantine-Bulgarian Wars Research
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I'm looking for a freelance who can do a deep-dive of the Byzantine-Bulgarian wars, specifically from Khan Krum's wars (starting 807) to the engagements under Emperor Theophilos in 836-37.
For context we are writing a historical novel about the early life of future Emperor Basil I.
We are looking specifically for details on:
-Macedonian and other Imperial subjects who were "kidnapped" and repopulated in Bulgarian lands. What did this look like in practice? What were their conditions like? What freedoms and restrictions did they have? Did they answer to local Bulgarian nobility?
-The rescue mission ordered by Theophilos in 837, where the Imperial Navy sailed up the Danube and rescued some of the Byzantine prisoners. What historical research is there on this event? We have found some, but not very detailed. What motivated the Emperor to do this? What was the context- we understand he did this while receiving help from the Bulgarians to put down a Slav rebellion.
-What was the role of the Slav people during this time?
-A general timeline of the conflicts.
In our novel we have Basil being one of the captives, probably born in captivity after his parents were taken. He is then rescued as part of Theopilos's mission.
