The Access to Healthy Assets and Hazard (AHAH) data shows the least and most healthy places
to live in Great Britain. The AHAH is an index for measuring how 'healthy' neighborhoods are
based on the quality of the environment, for example, local air pollution. The index also
includes the ease of access to health services and the availability of unhealthy retail outlets
such as fast food restaurants.
The health outcomes of communities are often positively and negatively affected by
environmental factors such as air pollution, access to health and other vital services, distance
from green space and distance from fast food outlets. It can be challenging to understand
how these influences are geographically distributed and how they overlap, posing challenges
for effective public health intervention at a range of scales and in different places.
Health researchers have long been concerned with understanding how the accessibility of
individuals to certain environmental features may influence health and well-being.
Policymakers are increasingly adopting such insights for designing healthy neighborhoods.
There is a need for small national-level data to support and inform decision-making.
Dr Mark Green and colleagues at the University of Liverpool have identified four categories
of lifestyle and environmental influences on health outcomes: access to retail outlets, access
to health services, air quality, and access to the natural environment.
The tasks
You are required to:
1. Undertake the review of appropriate literature to underpin the project. These should include problem exploration, such as deprivation causality and impact, and/or a solution focus combined literature on deprivation causality/impact and breaking the deprivation cycle.
2. Include a chapter explaining the methodology framework of your project, clearly explaining and justifying the methods used, including methods of analysis and data source.
3. Undertake further analysis and investigate the dataset to compare and contrast key information from Lower Level Super Output Areas (LSOAs) for England and Wales and Data Zones (DZ) for Scotland.
4. Identify prevailing trends between the three nations that may impact their perceived healthiness. In doing so, you are required to undertake relevant statistical analysis of the dataset. You must demonstrate knowledge and application of appropriate statistical analysis covered in the program (other relevant or advanced techniques may be used).
5. Develop visual representations of your key findings using suitable tools and techniques covered in the program (other relevant or advanced tools may be used). Use your creativity to present the data findings in a meaningful way.
6. Prepare a management report to present your findings based on your analyses above.
