Analytical Essay Crisis Management
Budget: €8 – €30 EUR
Students will have a written assignment (essay) of 2000 words covering different contextual and
theoretical applications of communication for either change or crisis management.
Students will be asked to select a real-life case study related to either crisis management or change
management. The written essay will provide a thorough analysis of the chosen case study,
addressing key aspects, challenges, strategies and outcomes in relation to the selected topic.
Students will apply a selected change or crisis management framework or model to the case study
and work through the different elements of how this was managed across the organisation. Students
will also draw from concepts covered across traditional, relational, cultural and networked structures
for communication as part of their critical analysis. Students will provide suggestions on how the
change or crisis management could have been improved and best practices to future-proof the
organisation.
Based on the students selection of either Change Management or Crisis Management, students will
use the following criteria as a guide for their written assignment.
For a crisis management case study, you should include:
• Nature of the crisis in question.
• The organisation's response (How the organization responded to the crisis, including their
empathy, speed, and appropriateness of action - theory should be used to support discussion
on crisis management).
• Impact on the organisation and its employees (How the crisis affected the organization,
including its reputation, customers, and sales should be included and theory on the
importance of communication should be used to support discussion).
• How the organisation recovered/did not recover from the crisis.
• The lessons learned and suggestions as to how the organisation might future-proof the
company against future crisis (What can be learned from the crisis, such as how to improve
decision-making, prepare for future crises, or enhance employee training - you should make
suggestions here as to how the company can lead change in the future - theory on leadership
required here).
• Reflection - What do you suggest could have been done differently?
• Theoretical models and frameworks to be applied throughout your discussion. Here is marking criteria to get 70+ mark: Introduction & relevance of topic to case study (10%)
Selection of topic is relevant and well suited to the chosen case
study. Introduction and background of organisation is provided
including current situation in relation to the chosen topic. Evidence
of research which has provided insight that sets the scene for the
remainder of the essay. Understanding of the issue (20%)
Excellent demonstration of a deep understanding of the crisis or
change management issues faced by the organization in the case
study. The impact on the organisation and stakeholders is
evident and theory is used to support discussion.
Analysis (35%)
Evidence of a comprehensive analysis of the factors contributing to
the crisis or the process of change management. Multiple
perspectives were considered. Outcomes and lessons learned were
presented clearly. Theoretical frameworks are used to help explain
the process of change/crisis management. Student has adhered to
the bullet points presented in terms of what should be included in
the discussion. Reflection (25%)
Excellent reflection presented including suggestions as to what
could have been done differently. Recommendations are based on
analysis and supported with theory and use of other examples to
underpin discussion. Theory on leadership is introduced and
evidence of understanding on role of leadership in crisis / change
management is clear. Conclusion - Presentation & Referencing (10%)

structure and layout. Language used is professional, clear and free
from errors. Text & any visuals used were engaging. Excellent
