Analysis of a speech
Budget: $15 – $25 USD
Analyze an (archived) historical speech or a TEDTalk, and prepare a written analysis of the speech to include the information below, and the structure below. For each point, 1) anchor/ground your observations with textual support (an actual thing that was said or done in the speech), and then 2) explain how your cited observation is an example of effective or ineffective rhetoric.
Exemplum gratis: “I noticed pathos being deployed to great effect in the speaker’s arguments, illustrated by ‘blah blah’ and ‘blah blahhh.’ Note in these two examples the emotion-laden language that moves the audience to pity and sympathy, and then also to action.”
IN ADDITION, you shall seek a more academic, deeper analysis to probe the symbols/themes used, the persuasive skills/techniques exploited, rhetoric, and relevance this speech (its internal strategy and delivery) had/has in terms of history, culture, society, etc…
Select a speech archived online or find a TEDTalk. View the speech two or three times and then complete the analysis described above. Use this template for your analysis. Delete instructions and questions; retain the terms and outline structure. Include the speakers name, location, date/time/place, link to video at the top of your document.
The submitted document should follow the provided outline, and should retain the outline structure as headings throughout the document. In total, the analysis should be approximately two pages single-spaced, 12-point standard type font. You can reference moments in the speech by approximate time-stamp.
