This is a formal essay about your own well-informed and nuanced educational philosophy and vision statement of what you think are the purposes of education. Imagine that you are communicating the essence of this essay in front of an interview committee as you are applying for a teaching position/ or a position that involves teaching/learning with others if you are not seeking employment in a school.
Please note: This essay should be articulated in terms that help the reader get a sense for what you believe a good education should entail and why you believe so. Each of us makes meaning differently. Paint a picture that others can relate to and clarify your own sources of knowledge and understanding.
In at least 1500 words and using 12 point Times New Roman font and APA referencing format, please address the following two bolded questions. I provide other guiding questions to help you structure your essay. Other than the two main questions, you may choose or add any questions that you find particularly meaningful. What are the purposes of education in/for a diverse and democratic society? To respond, you can draw on our readings on purpose and in democratic education, democratic care, and other relevant scholarship on democratic practices in education.
A. Why do schools exist? What do we gain by having these institutions? Why is it good to come together in schools and meet others who have different sources of knowledge and understanding in one's community?
B. How is formal schooling related to civic and community engagement? What skills are/should be taught in schools? What knowledge do students need to contribute to our lives in communities? What role does democratic care play in schools? How can schools be places that develop students' talents?
What are the ethical dimensions of teaching in/for a diverse and democratic society?
To respond to this question, you may draw on Paxton et al, Parker, Watson, etc. Barsky's value clarification process may also be useful. Ethical inquiry in this sense means clarifying the principles that guide the activity of teaching (as an educator, but also as a community) that results in an improved quality of life for all participants.
A. Which ethical principles help us create the necessary conditions to allow individuals to thrive in our communities?
B. How should we dialogue with others in our educational institutions? How should we approach conversations with colleagues, administrators, community members, and students about the purposes of education? How is deliberation a part of making sense of these purposes? To what extent can we learn about each other's sources of knowledge and understanding about school life?
