Research Proposal
Title:
Youth Unemployment and Urban Poverty: The Case of Amman, Jordan.
Research Question:
The question can be framed as follows: How does youth unemployment contribute to the persistence of urban poverty within Amman, Jordan?
Objectives:
1. To investigate current levels and causes of youth unemployment in Amman.
2. To study the relationship between youth unemployment and urban poverty.
3. To shed light on the means by which unemployed youths cope with economic and social challenges.
4. To recommend some policy interventions which can address youth unemployment and its poverty implications.
Significance of the Study:
Youth unemployment is one of the dire issues faced by many developing nations, including Jordan. This study will provide the evidence required to prove the extent to which lack of employment opportunities among youth escalates urban poverty. This research will add to the body of literature on development and policy analysis regarding youth empowerment and sustainable urban development.

Literature Review
Studies on youth unemployment in developing countries show its multidimensional effects on economic growth as well as on social inclusion and crime rates (ILO, 2022). Scholars like Betcherman (2015) and Assaad & Krafft (2018) attribute this phenomenon to the mismatch between education systems and labor market demands in the MENA region. High unemployment rates among university graduates, especially females, have been documented in Jordan studies.
However, while much information has been presented on unemployment trends, little has been done to analyze how youth unemployment contributes directly to urban poverty and household livelihoods. There are only a few studies that deal with the coping strategies pursued by unemployed youths or even contextualized ones in cities like Amman. This results in the gap that this study attempts to fill through linking unemployment to the broader issues of urban poverty and inequality.

Methodology
Research Design:
A qualitative case study approach will be used to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of unemployed youth in Amman.
Data Collection Methods:
- Semi-structured interviews with 15–20 unemployed youth (ages 18–30)
- Key informant interviews with policy-makers, NGO workers, and local employers
- Document analysis of government reports and NGO publications on employment and poverty
Sampling Techniques:
- Purposive sampling involving participants actively looking for jobs but remain unemployed.
- May use snowball sampling to reach other youths by getting referrals.
Data Analysis Plan:
- Interviews will be transcribed and thematically coded using NVivo or manual coding
- Patterns and themes will be developed around unemployment causes, consequences, and coping strategies
- Data will be interpreted within the broader framework of urban development and economic exclusion
Ethical Considerations:
- Participants will provide informed consent.
- Answers will be given anonymity and confidentiality.
- Ethical approval will be taken from the concerned university committee.
