BACKGROUND: In 2020 the entire globe was thrown into a tailspin due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We had to adapt very quickly as well as find new ways to live and operate. The entire health care industry has changed due to this external influence. Healthcare organizations learned a valuable lesson and one was that they were not prepared. Operations and the delivery of care was at a crossroads. Leaders of all industries had to manage their organizations during an extremely stressful time. Healthcare was especially impacted by the pandemic since healthcare professionals were not only having to care for the patients, but had to ensure they were safe as well.
One of the major adaptations was related to in-person care. The use of telehealth/telemedicine evolved as well as other initiatives, such as social distancing, limiting or prohibiting visitors, supply chain management related to personal protection equipment and ventilators, as well as the analysis of policies, protocols, and processes that needed to be revised. All of which was a major undertaking and stressed leadership as well as staff. The leader's role was to ensure the operations continued as safely and effectively as possible while also protecting patients and staff. This requires educating staff about new policies, processes and protocols.
