Choose ONE of three
1) How were states affected by religious conflict in Europe from the Edict of Nantes to the Thirty Years War? How did rulers respond to religious diversity?
2) How did the Catholic Church respond to the critiques of Luther and Calvin? How did it seek to re-establish Catholic unity in Counter-Reformation Europe and the world?
3) Henry of Navarre (Henry IV of France), Elizabeth I, and William of Orange (1533-1584) were all politiques. Define the term and explain why it applies to these three rulers.
Answers must be written in the form of an essay – TAs will discuss with you in sections how to write a history essay. The essay should be c.5 pages and include BOTH references (footnotes or endnotes) and a bibliography. Most of the information and references must come from the lectures, your textbook, and the online primary sources. Please be aware that most websites contain inaccurate information. Do NOT use any generic encyclopedia sites such as Wikipedia or Britannica etc. Please ask your TA if you have any queries as to sources and spell check AND proofread your essay before handing it in. Contact your TA immediately if you cannot complete the assignment on time due to exceptional circumstances.
