Fundamentals of Leadership
Final Paper
Research the biography of a noted business leader (reference list below) or historical leader of your choice. If you chose an historical figure, be sure you chose one that has substantive enough successes or failures that they are adequate for analysis. Analyze major successes and failures of this individual using leadership topics covered in this course or from reading of outside references. Consider:
• What traits and skills, would you conclude that they possessed that were key factors? What evidence of these do you see?
• How did they effectively or ineffectively employ leadership styles?
• Is there evidence of leadership psychology/emotional intelligence that was instrumental in their career trajectory, successes, or failures?
• What were their strengths and how did they engage other’s strengths?
• How did they develop, coach and utilize their team or subordinates?
• How did they fail as a leader in important endeavors that can be analyzed in light of our discussions of why leaders fail or leadership career derailleurs. What did they learn from their failures?
• How did they demonstrate ethical or unethical values based on one or more of the 6 factors of ethical leadership (figure 12.1)?
• Is there evidence that they achieved or failed to achieve superior results because of approaches to motivation, conflict resolution, or development of subordinates?
• How did they establish a constructive (or destructive) environment for their organizations?
• Did they successfully navigate generational challenges to accomplish what they did?
• Any other analysis within a leadership framework you can cite.

Papers should be typed, 12 font Times New Roman, minimum 5 pages, 6 pages maximum not including cover page, line spacing at 1.5 lines, 1” margins. The final is due before the start of the final class.
References are important. You should be able to draw on a collection of references. List the full reference, not just the web link.
Structure your paper like the mid-term papers:
• Cover, with name and subject
• Executive Summary
• Background of the leader
• Accomplishment(s) or failures(s)
• Your analysis of each relative to course content (why did they succeed or fail)
• Summary and Conclusion
• References (complete references, not just links)

Papers are due on 2 Dec, before class.
Class on 2 Dec will be 3 minute talks, without slides, in which you may be called upon to summarize your analysis of the successes/failures of your leader relevant to our course topics. You may use notes.
Minimum topics to cover include:
• Brief background and successes.
• What leadership traits and skills did they display? What evidence of these do you see?
• What leadership styles did they display?
• What were their major failures and what, if anything, did they learn from their failures?
• What is your takeaway from your research and why did you choose your leader?
