Discussion Prompt Short Summary/Opinion
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
The America Psychological Association (APA) outlines five principles for ethical research practice (https://www.apa.org/monitor/jan03/principles) For this discussion, we will focus on:
Voluntary Participation
Informed Consent
Confidentiality and Privacy
which fall under the 3rd and 4th principles outlined by the APA.
For each of these concepts, explain in your own words why it is important for someone conducting psychological research to follow these principles strictly in their practice.
Voluntary Participation: All ethical research must be conducted using willing participants. Study volunteers should not be bribed, coerced, or threatened or deceived into participation
Informed Consent: Participants should be informed in advance of the purpose, procedures, and potential risks of participating in the study. In some cases, deception may be necessary to avoiding influencing responses and behaviors being studied. In those cases, full debriefing must be provided immediately after participation.
Confidentiality and Privacy: Participants must be guaranteed that any and all identifying information and individual responses will not be shared with anyone not directly involved in the study, data gathering and analysis.
So, why are each of these so important? What problems could arise if the researcher does not follow one or more of these principles of practice? Be specific, and feel free to provide examples
