Data Visualisation Research Paper Report
Budget: €30 – €250 EUR
This assignment requires you to select a research topic in data visualisation and summarise the key aspects of the topic in a research report with a minimum of 1300 words and no more than 1800 words. Your report should refer to at least two research papers in this topic.
You may use figures in the paper and/or your own figures to illustrate the key ideas in the paper. However, do not include a figure without referring to it and explaining it.
The audience for this report is a postgraduate student like yourself. Your report should provide next year's students with a clear summary of a particular topic in data visualisation, with reference to at least two research papers addressing topic.
The report should have an introduction that gives an overview of the topic and explains why it is important. It should briefly introduce the papers you are referencing and explain briefly how they address the topic (e.g the problem or challenges that define the topic).
The body of the report should outline the approach, findings of the research papers you have selected. This should not be presented as a list. There are several ways of presenting this information and it will depend on topic and the papers. For example, you may want to compare (what they have in common) and contrast (what are different) approaches or findings.
Finally, your conclusion section should summarise what you have found. You should give your own opinion/critique in the conclusion. E.g. why do you believe this is an important topic; what did you find interesting and why; which approach was more convincing; were there any weaknesses in the approaches your reviewed; is there future work you foresee in this topic. The conclusion is an important section. It is not the same as the introduction. By just reading the Introduction and the conclusion sections, anyone reading your paper should have a very good idea of the content of your report .
Some guidelines:
a topic should not be the title of a single paper. Your report is expected to describe at least two papers, so the topic needs to be general enough to cover the information in these papers
a topic is not an overally broad subject such as 'perception', 'data management'. Make clear in your description what the relationship/relevance is to data visualisation. The headings in the research paper list are just headings for the purpose of organisation. Your topic description should be more specific - not just a heading taken from the list of papers.
a topic cannot cover topics we already cover in learning material. I think rthis includes pretty much all Hadley Wickham's work on ggplot, grammar of graphics and tidyverse
