Critical Review (MSc Medical Genetics)
Budget: £10 – £60 GBP
You are required to produce a 3000-word critical review. The critical review should assess in depth two primary research papers. One paper must use (a) animal model(s), the other paper must use (b) regenerative medicine/stem cell-based approach. Both papers selected should investigate the same or related genetic disease(s). A selected paper may incorporate aspects of both (a) and (b), this is acceptable, however, a second paper must also be critically reviewed.
Through the Critical Review, you must demonstrate an accurate, up-to-date knowledge of your chosen pathology. Your critical review should assess the approaches taken by the research studies, the validity of the findings and the potential impact of the studies. Your Critical Review must demonstrate understanding of the following:
The review addresses LO 2, 3 & 4:
2. have a mechanistic understanding of the animal models of genetic disease and how they can be manipulated 3. critically evaluate the strategies available for using stem cells in genetic manipulation.
4. Have a high level of understanding of the ethical issues relating to genetic manipulation and the use of animals and stem cells in medical research.
The structure of the critical review should be as follows:
-Introduction: Background information of the pathology, use references different to papers (a, b) that you go on to review.
-Paper (a): Critical review of research paper (a), addresses understanding (2, 4).
-Paper (b): Critical review of research paper (b), addresses understanding (3, 4).
-Discussion: Compare & contrast the approaches undertaken in the two studies (2,3 & 4).
-Conclusion: A short summary/concluding paragraph.
