Astronomy Research Paper (Synodic Periods)
Budget: $10 – $30 CAD
Determine the synodic period (time it takes to return to the same position in the sky relative to the Sun from your current location, for example the time from opposition until the next opposition) of 2 inner and 2 outer planets as seen from Earth, Mars and Saturn. Describe how the synodic period changes depending on your observing location. In particular, predict where you would have to be and what planet would you have to observe to have the shortest synodic period, and how long would it be; and similarly for the longest synodic period, where would you have to observe from, which planet would you have to observe, and how long would it be? Report your findings in a 1.5- 2 page research paper (MLA format preferred but not required).
