In this assignment you are invited to combine the approaches of art history and history: consider how the two disciplines are presented in the material and make sure you discuss at least one textual and one visual source.
You will need to think carefully about what is involved in the display of objects and how this might be understood to be ‘political’.
Give due attention to these objects’ histories: their making, their meanings, and their acquisition by Europeans.
In your discussion, it may be useful to consider the economic, political and social roots of European understandings and approaches to African cultures.
