Here's some details my professor has given us:
t is finally time to finish our research and create the outline for the Argumentative Literary Research Essay on Carmilla. This will combine a close reading of Le Fanu's novella, a literary theory, and detailed research.
As a reminder, this will be a 1,200 word essay on Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. While Purdue OWL is a fantastic way to get started, it is not allowed to be cited for this essay. That's because students are also being tested on their ability to research a theory and implement it.
Here's the list of literary theories he wants us to pick out of for the essay:
Marxist Criticism
Objectivism (Ayn Rand)
Biographical Criticism
Psychoanalytic Criticism
Feminist Criticism
Moral Criticism
Gender Studies and Queer Theory
Here is example thesis statements he gave us to go off of:
Thesis 1: When viewed through Ayn Rand's Objectivism, Carmilla asserts that chivalry harms the individual following its selfless virtues and even destroys society as a whole.
Thesis 2 (Freud): Using the central three characters as symbols of the id, ego, and superego, Carmilla warns readers of the destruction which occurs when the superego and ego fail to regulate the id.
Note 1 : In this, I would argue that Laura represents the ego, Laura's father the superego, and Carmilla the id.
Note 2: Even though this is Freud, I do not have to go with the ego, superego, and id as symbols. Instead, I could discuss what the work has to say about certain defense mechanisms or the significance of dreams.
Thesis 3: Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla demonstrates how the patriarchy with demolish any attempt at female agency or sisterhood in order to enforce traditional gender roles.
Thesis 4a (moral): When viewed through Christian values, Carmilla champions trusting in God and resisting temptation; therefore, the novella is good for society.

Thesis 4b: Carmilla sympathizes with the titular character's immoral actions to the point of condoning them; therefore, when viewed through Christian values, the novella is not good for society.
Thesis 5 (psychoanalytical character analysis): Since Carmilla cannot come to terms with her violent actions as a vampire, she rationalizes them as being byproducts of love. (Note on this thesis: If I choose to go with this, I can write only on Carmilla since it's an argumentative character analysis about her.)
