This assignment asks you to find a compelling article that discusses the controversy you chose to investigate this semester. This article should be an opinion piece or a popular science article that aligns with your personal opinions regarding the controversy. You are asked to dissect the article, reflect on the author, and describe what you learned. The steps to completing this assignment successfully are listed below:
Select the article pertaining to the controversy you selected that you wish to summarize and analyze
Summarize the article and points presented, and analyze biases
What is the topic/argument of focus and what is the main problem or issue?
What is the author’s central claim or argument?
Are any biases presented? If so, what are those biases? If not, how did you arrive at that opinion?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article?
Investigate the author
Who is the author?
What is their background and how might their background shape their world view or how they present the information in the article?
Does your world view align with what is being presented in this article? Why or why not?
Was your initial opinion bolstered, solidified, or changed from reading this article? How so?
Did the article deepen your understanding of the controversy? How so?
What is a technique the author implemented that helped make their point? Would you consider using this technique to craft your argument related to the issue?
Why are the problems and the arguments presented in the article interesting or important in the HDNR field?
Include a link to the article you analyzed and properly cite the article at the bottom of your summary
