Academic Literature Review: Sustainable Development in an Era of Globalised Trade
Background
The world is getting smaller and global development is slowly making the world a better place in different ways. Today, we have more opportunities than ever before, to travel, work and study abroad and experience new cultures. On the other hand, globalisation also leads to challenges that we face together: climate change, terrorism, economic recession, sustainability issues and increasing migration require countries to work together towards shared solutions.
These shared solutions may not be in the best interest of all, as agendas, financial gain and use of resources impact how we approach solutions for sustainability as trade is exerting a major influence on the modern world's free market economy. Social movements and global projects such as antiglobalism, alterglobalism and sustainable development reveal that reconstruction of present economic and political structures is needed for the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals to become realised. All of these trends share a common purpose in the future of mankind.
Aims for this Module
In this assignment, you will develop both important language and academic study skills. You will learn and read about different global issues that affect society, and the Global Goals for Sustainable Developement. You will write a literature review to summarise the current literature produced on the topic.
Focus learning objectives
to understand how to summarise how issues have changed over time and the outlook for the future
analysing factual information to make future predictions
strategies for reading academic texts, sorting and selecting information and evaluating the reliability of sources
structures for expository and academic texts
how to use written sources effectively to find suitable information, and use ideas in your own writing
how to work collaboratively to share research
research and note-taking skills for research and annotation
writing a formal academic text
Tasks and Assessment
Write a literature review as an academic paper, based on the following specific argument and question:
Even if the United Nations' Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are universally accepted, there are still hindrances for their realisation and barriers to sustainable development. One such barrier could be globalisation and global trade. How can these two concepts be combined for successful future developement?
The first step is to do background research in order to select a global issue that will be the topic of your paper. You will begin by creating a background based on reliable information from a selection of sources. This will serve as an introduction and contextualisation in your paper.
Present a summary of the current effects and possible solutions by describing previous research in the field and on this topic. Focus on describing multiple and different perspectives on the issue based on multiple global goals, analyse and contribute with a conclusion that addresses the argument, answers the question and describes how different solutions proposed in the literature could be effective.
Use available guides for the structure and content, such as the Purdue OWL.
Select and use reliable sources to add support to your statements, and reference them by using in-text citation. Provide a list of references on the last page of your paper, in the APA style.
