Budget: $10 – $30 CAD
The home Wi-Fi devices (in the $30 ~ $300 price range) are marketed as Wi-Fi/wireless “routers” (i.e. layer 3 devices). Your teacher thinks these devices should be instead called Wi-Fi/wireless gateways (i.e. layer 7 devices).
A. Do your own research to learn more about OSI layer 3 vs OSI layer 7 functions.
B. Examine your own home Wi-Fi device’s features and functions. Alternatively, please examine any of the “Asus Wifi routers” for features and functions.
C. Stating your decision on Wi-Fi/wireless “routers” (L3) or “gateways” (L7). You will need to defend your position using what you learned about L3 and L7 functions.
Multiple sources (4 or more) are expected to be researched, analyzed, and synthesized. Your sources must exclude the course lectures/slides (but you can use the course textbook). You are expected to consult one or more data/computer networking textbooks to understand the difference between OSI layer 3 and layer 7 devices.
All sources must be cited from your main section using your preferred citation standards (e.g. APA, MLA, etc). Please consult with Sheridan Library or look up “citation” if necessary.
You must write this report using your own words (after synthesizing and understanding your sources). Cut-and-paste or simply substituting words to avoid plagiarism detection will result in zero (0) mark. The plagiarism checking tool called TurnitIn will be used to check your submission.
Online resources often have incorrect / partially correct information. Please note:
• L7 gateway is not just a combination of router + modem, as claimed by some websites.
• The debate of L3 firewall vs. L7 firewall has nothing to do with this question
There is no need to explain what is Wi-Fi, as you will learn IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi later.
Default gateway (which is a layer 3 router interface into a LAN) has nothing to do with OSI L7 Gateway functionalities.
Your answer must include:
- short introduction (stating whether you think these devices are routers or gateways)
- a main section of several paragraphs explaining what you learned about L3 and L7 functions, and how you came to your conclusion. Please cite your sources. This section must be two (2) pages or less.
