Pick one of the below options to inspire your final paper. Be sure to indicate on your paper which option you chose.
Organization: you should organize your paper into the following three parts.
Introduction: Provide a clear description of your topic (thesis), a brief summary of your specific conflict, injustice, or intercultural situation, then introduce your main points (3 intercultural communication theories that will be used to analyze your selected topic).
Body: Select 3 intercultural theories covered this semester with which to analyze your topic (individualism, ascription, narratives, role expectations, fundamental attribution error, ethnocentrism, prejudice, functions of prejudice, object conflict, etc.). Use each theory to help your reader understand how the specific conflict, injustice, or intercultural situation, can be understood through theories covered in this class. When you make a claim, be sure to follow it up with evidence (examples, expert testimony, references, sources, data, etc.).
Conclusion: Provide a brief but meaningful summary of your overall findings based on the intercultural communication theories that you related to your specific conflict, injustice, or intercultural situation. Discuss possible solutions based on intercultural communication theories, then end with an impactful final thought. What point is at the heart of your paper?
Papers will be evaluated based on three criteria. First, papers must demonstrate an understanding of communication concepts and principles covered this semester. Second, papers must show that you have a thorough understanding of the topic you've selected. Third, papers must demonstrate effective research, writing mechanics, and style.
Requirements:
At least five outside resources must be used for this paper, three of which must be academic sources (Check the Mullins Library link in the Communications section of the Bb course). Communication majors wishing to use this paper as fulfillment of their Senior Writing Requirement, please add the note "Submitting this paper as the Fulbright College Senior Writing Requirement" to the top of your midterm submittal, then when you turn in the final paper, please apply the same note to your title page. You are responsible for knowing and meeting the increased length and research requirements.
The paper must be typed (double spaced), content should be 10-15 pages in length (plus a title and reference page), and must display acceptable college level standards of grammar, citation, punctuation, sentence structure paragraph structure, spelling, etc. Be sure to edit your paper before turning it in.
Use 12-point font and 1 inch margins on all sides.
Use APA style unless your major uses a different style manual. If this is the case, be sure to indicate to me on the title page with your option choice.
Option #1: Conflict across Cultures
Research and explore a current or historical ethnic conflict from an intercultural communication perspective. Choose a specific conflict and:
Give a brief overview of the conflict (reference at least one source that demonstrates your research on the conflict itself).
Select and identify three intercultural communication concepts covered this semester that you will use to analyze the conflict. Then, use them explain what cultural misunderstanding or differences may have begun the conflict, influenced the conflict, and/or keeps the conflict from a resolution. This is the body of your paper.
As you conclude, discuss course concepts that might help to increase understanding between the two sides. Provide possible solutions, based on intercultural concepts. How might the conflict be resolved? Can the conflict actually be resolved? What kinds of ideas will need to be adopted to come to a resolution and what, if any, cultural beliefs, etc., could hinder the efforts and why?
