Materials Design Report
Budget: $30 – $250 AUD
As a civil engineer, you have been requested by a client to write a report that formulates the materials specification for the design and construction of two members made from concrete and steel in a new high-rise 49-storey building structure. The two members are as follows:
• Member 1: roof level reinforced support columns
• Member 2: underground level prestressed transfer beams
Member 1 and Member 2 will form part of a new high-rise 49-storey building structure that will be
erected next to the International Towers Sydney Tower 1 at Barangaroo in Sydney.
The new building structure will be erected following a similar design type to the International Towers Sydney Tower 1 and be exposed to the same environmental conditions.
The 3 stages of the project are as follows.
1. Construction stage of Member 1 and Member 2
2. Mechanical performance design stage of Member 1 and Member 2
3. Durability criteria design stage of Member 1 and Member 2
Please see Appendix A for related figures.
Project Task
For the given project scenario and each of the 3 stages above perform the following tasks to formulate the materials specification.
Task 1: Construction stage of Member 1 and Member 2
Focusing on the construction stage of Member 1 and Member 2:
• List and specify 1 design requirement of Member 1 and Member 2
• List and describe the key concrete and steel properties meeting these requirements
• Describe the concrete and steel formulations needed to address the properties
• List and describe the inherent factors controlling the concrete and steel properties
Specific aspects that will need to be addressed include:
• Workability requirements for placing the concrete
• Method of consolidation applied to the concrete
Consideration should be given as to how Member 1 and Member 2 will be constructed in the formwork incorporating the reinforcing and prestressing steels and whether this method of construction will take place on or off the project site.
Task 2: Mechanical performance design stage of Member 1 and Member 2
Focusing on the mechanical performance design stage of Member 1 and Member 2:
• List and specify 1 design requirement of Member 1 and Member 2
• List and describe the key concrete and steel properties meeting these requirements
• Describe the concrete and steel formulations needed to address the properties
• List and describe the inherent factors controlling the concrete and steel properties
Specific aspects that need to be addressed include:
• Strength of the concrete at relative age(s)
• Strength of the steel
Task 3: Durability criteria design stage of Member 1 and Member 2
Focusing on the durability criteria design stage of Member 1 and Member 2:
• List and specify 1 design requirement of Member 1 and Member 2
• List and describe the concrete and steel properties meeting these requirements
• Describe the concrete and steel formulations needed to address the properties
• List and describe the inherent factors controlling the concrete and steel properties
• Describe a low carbon solution for the concrete
Specific aspects that need to be addressed include:
• Environmental conditions as per Figures 1 and 2
• Durability testing criterion of the concrete at relative age(s)
• Cover depth of the concrete and coating required on steel
• Raw materials used in the concrete to make it more sustainable and eco-friendly
