Senior Backend Engineer for AI Answer Evaluation Platform

About the Role
We are building a high-scale test & AI Answer Evaluation platform used by Lakhs of students concurrently.
The system handles time-bound exams, AI-based handwritten answer evaluation, and burst traffic (3k–10k+ users).
We are looking for a senior engineer who can own backend architecture and scalability decisions, not just write APIs.
This is a hands-on role with real production ownership.
Key Responsibilities
Own and evolve the backend architecture for a high-concurrency exam platform
Design scalable, fault-tolerant systems with no single points of failure
Handle burst workloads (thousands of PDF uploads + async processing)
Design and tune background job systems (queues, workers, retries, rate limits)
Make architectural decisions around horizontal scaling, infra limits, and bottlenecks
Guide mid-level developers with code reviews and architectural direction
Ensure production readiness (timeouts, retries, graceful degradation, observability)
Systems You’ll Be Working On
Stateless Node.js backend designed for horizontal scaling
Redis-based systems (timers, queues, rate limiting, coordination)
Async job processing using BullMQ or equivalent
Server-authoritative time systems (exam timers, auto-submit logic)
Multi-tenant architecture (subdomain-based tenant isolation)
Failure recovery strategies (Redis crashes, worker restarts, partial failures)
Required Skills (Must-Have)
4+ years of backend engineering experience
Strong hands-on experience with Node.js
Deep understanding of:
Stateless backend design
Horizontal scaling strategies
Background workers and job queues
Proven experience using Redis in production
Experience designing systems that handle high concurrency and burst traffic
Strong fundamentals in system design and trade-offs
Ability to reason clearly about CPU, memory, and I/O bottlenecks
Good to Have (Strong Plus)
Experience with BullMQ, RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar systems
Experience processing large files (PDFs, OCR, media pipelines)
Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Docker)
Experience scaling systems from 10k to 100k+ users
Experience building multi-tenant SaaS platforms

Not a CRUD-only API role
Not a frontend role
Not a role focused on “adding sockets everywhere”
Not someone who solves scale problems only by increasing concurrency
