React Native AWS Pinpoint Push Notifications

Having some difficulty to get push notifications to work when app is in background
Have Firebase working when app is in foreground and the messages are coming in.
On Android when app running on emulator and in background, Firebase does deliver the notification but when I click the react native handler is not catching the event.
On iOS notifications not working even when real device is plugged in
