ASSIGNMENT 1
Weeks 1 through 10 are devoted to the basics of experimental linguistics and statistics, and
Assignment 1 (A1) is meant to give you an opportunity to apply your knowledge from those
lectures and sharpen your skills further. You may consult with a classmate but 1) you must reveal
the name of the student with whom you collaborate, on the first page of your assignment, and 2)
you must provide your own work; do not copy their work.
Task Instructions:
Part I:
1) Research Project:
Choose a dataset bearing a number that matches the number you chose in class.
Assume you want to undertake a research project to examine one research hypothesis
using the data set you have chosen.
a. State your project title.
b. Formulate your hypothesis and research question for the project. Make sure you follow
what you have learned regarding hypothesis formulation.
c. How many levels/conditions are there for your independent/dependent variable? And
what are they? You must have only one dependent variable and one independent
variable, and the hypothesis must be testable with the data you have regardless of
whether your hypothesis lands up being confirmed or disconfirmed.
d. What type of data is your dependent variable? And what type is your independent
variable?
2) Subjects, Task, and Process:
a. How many participants do you have in your dataset?
b. Do you think the number of participants you have would be enough to test your
hypotheses reliably? Discuss it in light of your textbook authors’ explanation.
c. How many items (or/and trials) per participant are there?
d. Do you have a between-subject or within-subject design? (repeated vs. non-repeated).
Explain it.
e. What task do you think the participants completed? And how would you think they did
it? Speculate based on the variables you have.
3) Results:
a. Provide a complete output of descriptive statistics for your data (i.e., central tendency
measures, frequency, distribution… etc., depending on the data you have).
b. Run the appropriate inferential statistics to test your hypothesis in your project.
Select the test wisely.
c. Report your results, and provide a brief explanation on whether your hypothesis was
confirmed or refuted.
Part II:
1) Add another project in which you incorporate MORE than one independent variable (but
don't try to use more than one dependent variable), following the steps below:
a. Establish a title.
b. Firm a hypothesis and a research question.
c. Provide descriptive statistics.
d. Provide inferential statistics (including main and interaction effects).
e. What does the outcome tell us about the hypothesis?
