Transform Word Docs into retype Markdown files for retype

We are looking for a freelancer to develop a small, intelligent tool that converts Microsoft Word documents (.docx) into clean, well-structured Markdown (.md) files, optimized for use with Retype – a static site generator for documentation.

The tool should allow users to drag and drop Word files and automatically generate local Markdown files that retain the original structure and formatting as closely as possible. It should handle headings, lists, bold/italic text, links, tables, and images properly – with the result looking professional and directly usable in Retype without the need for manual cleanup.

Ideally, the solution should be a lightweight Windows desktop application (e.g. written in C++ with a minimal GUI) or a local web app (no server-side/cloud dependencies). Users should be able to select an output directory where the converted .md files will be saved.

We expect the tool to intelligently translate Word formatting into Markdown syntax – for example:

Word headings to #, ##, etc.

Lists and numbered items correctly mapped

Word tables converted to clean Markdown tables

Hyperlinks and images properly formatted with relative or absolute paths

Optional frontmatter block for Retype (title, description, etc.)

Experience with text conversion tools such as Pandoc, OpenXML SDK, or similar libraries is a strong plus. Familiarity with Markdown best practices and specifically the requirements of Retype would be highly valuable.

We’re targeting technical writers and project teams who want a fast and efficient way to transform existing Word-based documentation into Markdown for static documentation sites, without spending hours reformatting content manually.

The project is ready to start immediately. Our goal is to have a working prototype within 1–2 weeks. Please include relevant experience, previous similar projects, and an estimated time and budget in your application.
