Astropy and Photutils for photometry

Hi, I'm trying to do photometry on the attached FITS file. I'm trying to determine the optimum aperture to get the best signal-to-noise ratio.

I'm very inexperienced at Python and have never used astropy or photutils before. I'm mostly experienced with pandas dataframes.

I'm having difficulty doing what I would have thought would be a simple calculation:
# signal = (aperture_sum - (annulus_median * area_of_aperture)) * GAIN
# noise = sqrt(aperture_sum * GAIN)

However, I'm at a loss for how to get this to work because of various factors like results having dimensions that I can't turn into scalars.

I'm looking for someone who can help modify the attached Jupyter notebook in such a way that it can calculate the optimal aperture for the observation. I have 11 other observations to do the same with, so a template that I can just change the file name for would be optimal. The signal-to-noise can be taken as the average for the perhaps 10-20 brightest objects in the observation.

Again, I'm a complete novice at this, soI'm not even fully-aware of what it is I'm even asking to be done in terms of code. Happy to answer any questions that I can!
