I stand before you today with humility, purpose, and hope.
The United Kingdom is a nation with a long tradition of constitutional democracy, open debate, and global responsibility. It is also a home to millions of people whose roots extend far beyond these islands—into Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East. This diversity is not a weakness of Britain; it is one of its greatest strengths.
For the African diaspora, the United Kingdom is more than a place of residence. It is a place of contribution. African doctors sustain the NHS. African entrepreneurs build businesses and create jobs. African students enrich universities. African communities strengthen culture, faith, and civic life. You are not guests in this country—you are stakeholders in its future.
Yet we must also speak honestly. The relationship between Africa and the United Kingdom carries a complex history. There are chapters of cooperation and shared progress, and there are chapters of injustice and imbalance. True leadership does not deny history—it learns from it. True partnership is built not on silence, but on truth, respect, and equality.
As Africa Unity Voice, my message is clear:
The future relationship between Africa and the United Kingdom must be one of partnership, not dependency; mutual respect, not hierarchy; shared prosperity, not extraction.
Democracy must be at the centre of this relationship. Democracy is not merely the act of voting—it is accountability, rule of law, independent institutions, free media, and the dignity of every citizen. These principles, long embedded in British political life, are the same principles millions across Africa continue to strive for, protect, and sometimes sacrifice their lives to defend.
The African diaspora has a unique and powerful role to play. You are bridges between continents. You understand the realities of Britain and the aspirations of Africa. Your voice matters—in Parliament, in civil society, in business, in media, and in global dialogue. Silence is not neutrality; engagement is responsibility.
I call upon the United Kingdom to continue supporting democratic institutions, peacebuilding, youth opportunity, and ethical investment across Africa—not as charity, but as enlightened partnership. A stable, democratic, and prosperous Africa is not only Africa’s interest; it is a global interest.
And I call upon Africans in the diaspora:
Do not disconnect from your roots. Do not underestimate your influence. Organise, vote, speak, build, and lead. Let your success here become a force for justice, unity, and democratic progress across our continent.
Let us choose unity over division.
Let us choose dialogue over distrust.
Let us choose a future where Africa and the United Kingdom walk forward together—equal in dignity, shared in responsibility, and united in purpose.
