Self-Resetting Hinged Cover Prototype
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I want to test a simple hinged board that behaves in three repeatable stages:
1. It starts in a vertical, resting position.
2. When I manually push it at the top position 90° (around the botoom side) down to the horizontal plane, it must stay there on its own, perhaps relaxing back 5–10° so the mechanism clearly “catches.”
3. If I push it down a second time, it should release and spring or rotate itself all the way back to the original vertical position, ready to run through the cycle again.
No actual box is needed; a freestanding rig on a small base is fine. The driving action is manual push only—no motors, sensors, or buttons. Material choice is open because this is only a proof-of-concept, and I’m cost-conscious. Plastic, sheet metal, plywood, or a 3-D-printed solution all work as long as the hinge or latch system proves the motion reliably.
Deliverables I’m expecting:
• A working physical prototype that demonstrates the behavior described above.
• Basic drawings or CAD files and a short parts list so I can reproduce or iterate on the design.
If your approach uses off-the-shelf hinges, torsion springs, magnets, or a clever latch, just explain it up front. I care more about a solid, repeatable motion than polished aesthetics.
