Extendable Pole with Hook and Torch
Budget: $250 – $750 AUD
Prototype Plan: Extendable Electrical Snake Retriever Pole
1. Purpose
A lightweight, extendable pole designed to retrieve electrical snakes or draw wires from confined spaces such as wall cavities, ceilings, or under floors. The pole features:
A hook head for snagging and retrieving snakes.
A built-in LED torch for illumination inside dark cavities.
Insulated construction for electrical safety.
2. Core Features
Feature Description
Extendable Pole Telescopic design (similar to a painter’s pole or camera monopod). Extends from 0.6 m to 2.5 m. Locking twist mechanism or snap locks at each section.
Material Non-conductive fiberglass composite or reinforced nylon to ensure insulation and light weight.
Hook Head Interchangeable stainless steel or aluminum hook tip (approx. 50 mm wide, curved end) mounted on a detachable threaded head. Optional magnetic tip version for retrieving metal fish tapes.
Torch Integration Compact LED light (rechargeable, 300+ lumens) integrated into the head assembly, directed along the pole’s axis for visibility in cavities. Rechargeable via USB-C port.
Power Source Built-in rechargeable lithium battery in the handle with on/off switch and charging port. Run time: ~4–5 hours continuous use.
Grip Handle Rubberized, ergonomic handle with thumb-activated LED switch and anti-slip texture.
Mounting Port Universal ¼" thread at the end (so other attachments, like mirrors or cameras, can be added later).
Safety Rated to 1000V insulation (if made from certified fiberglass). No exposed metal sections other than the hook.
3. Design Layout (Concept)
Head Section:
Threaded aluminum collar for interchangeable hook tips.
Built-in LED ring around the base of the hook (angled beam).
Transparent or frosted light diffuser for even illumination.
Pole Section:
2–3 telescoping fiberglass tubes with locking mechanisms.
Internal wiring channel (low-voltage for torch power).
Handle Section:
Rechargeable battery pack with USB-C charging port.
On/off rocker or momentary push button for LED control.
Rubber grip sleeve for comfort and insulation.
4. Dimensions (example prototype)
Component Specification
Collapsed Length 600 mm
Extended Length 2500 mm
Weight ~700 g
Hook Size 50 mm x 30 mm (curved tip)
LED Output 300–500 lumens
Battery 3.7V 2000 mAh rechargeable Li-ion
Material Fiberglass composite pole, aluminum hook tip, rubber handle
5. Prototype Materials (readily available for testing)
Telescopic fiberglass painter’s pole (repurpose as base).
Small USB rechargeable LED torch or inspection light.
Stainless steel wire or coat hanger for hook prototype.
Heat shrink tubing and epoxy for insulation and securing components.
3D printed or epoxy-molded head housing to integrate hook + LED.
6. Future Upgrades
Swivel hook or interchangeable magnetic end.
Small camera integration (Wi-Fi inspection camera module).
Detachable battery pack or magnetic charging.
Clip-on accessory system (mirror, camera, magnet).
