Modular Steel Emergency Shelter Design

Job ID: 40420687

Budget: $750 – $1,500 CAD

Engineering Design for Modular Steel Emergency Shelter (4’ x 8’ x 7’)

Project Overview:
We are seeking a qualified mechanical/structural engineer or industrial designer to develop a fully engineered, modular emergency shelter constructed from 1/4” thick steel.

The shelter will be used for storm protection / emergency use and must be designed for strength, manufacturability, and ease of transport + assembly.

Scope of Work:
1. Structural Design
Shelter dimensions: 8 ft (W) x 4 ft (D) x 7 ft (H)

Material: 1/4" (6.35mm) steel plate

Design must include:

Wall, roof, and anchor system

Reinforcement strategy

Door system (secure, inward swing with sealing)

Load-bearing calculations (wind / debris / bullet resistent impact considerations preferred)

2. Modular Design Requirements
Shelter must be modular for transport and assembly

Panels should be:

Bolt-together

Sized for manageable handling (no oversized single pieces)

Design considerations:

Minimize number of parts while maintaining strength

Repeatable panel sections preferred

Alignment features

Gasket/sealing system for joints

3. Fabrication-Ready Drawings
Provide:

Detailed shop drawings

Flat patterns for cutting (CNC/plasma/laser compatible)

Weld callouts and specifications

Bolt sizes, grades, and locations

Material list (BOM)

File formats:

STEP / IGES (3D files)

DXF (cut files)

PDF (drawings)

4. Assembly Instructions (User-Friendly)
Create a clear, step-by-step assembly guide including:

Exploded diagrams

Numbered components

Required tools

Bolt sequence and torque suggestions

Estimated assembly time

Safety notes

This should be simple enough for a non-professional installer to follow.

5. Deliverables
3D CAD model (complete assembly + individual parts)

Fabrication drawings

Cut files (DXF)

Bill of Materials (BOM)

Assembly manual (PDF, visual + written)

Performance Considerations (Preferred but not mandatory):
Designed with tornado / extreme weather resistance in mind

Reinforced door frame and hinges that swings inward

Anchoring system (to concrete slab)

Ideal Freelancer Qualifications:
Experience in steel structures, fabrication, or protective structures

Strong CAD skills (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, etc.)

Understanding of modular product design

Ability to create clear fabrication + assembly documentation

Additional Notes:
Simplicity and manufacturability are key

Design should be optimized for repeat production

Preference for designs that minimize welding and maximize bolt-together construction

Must be stamped by engineer.
