Project: Design of Information Booklet (Print + PDF)
Overview
Understanding Animal Research Oceania (UAR Oceania) is commissioning the design of an information booklet that helps parents and young people understand the emotional impact of working in roles that involve caring for animals used in scientific research.
These roles (such as animal technicians and veterinarians in research facilities) can involve significant emotional labour. The booklet is intended to support families in understanding this work and the feelings that may accompany it.
The final booklet will be made available as a free downloadable PDF and also printed, so the design must be suitable for print layout.
The tone should be:
Clear and accessible
Empathetic and respectful of the topic
Suitable for both young people and adults
Content
The copy has already been written and is approximately 3,875 words
The booklet will include:
Cover page
Contents page
Inner pages with text and visual elements
Some sections of the text should be broken out into call-outs or presented as simple visual summaries
The aim is to make the booklet inviting and easy to read, while remaining appropriate for a serious topic.
Visual Direction
Brand guidance will be provided, including suggested colours, preferred fonts, organisational branding
Examples of previous UAR Oceania publications will be provided guide to the general style and tone.
The design should feel:
Professional but approachable
Calm and supportive in tone
Appropriate for a sensitive topic
Images and visual assets will primarily be supplied by UAR Oceania.
Designers should not independently select stock images or icons without discussion. If the designer believes additional visual elements (such as icons or illustrations) would improve the design, these can be suggested and agreed during the design process.
The booklet should be designed for print layout and provided in the following formats
Print-ready PDF
Digital PDF suitable for online download
Working files
Either:
Canva template (preferred if practical), or
Adobe InDesign file with packaged assets
I have access to Canva and can collaborate there if useful. I do not normally work in InDesign but could access it if necessary.
The final booklet is expected to be approximately:
12–20 pages (depending on layout and visual treatment)
Scope of Work
The designer will be responsible for:
Designing the booklet layout
Creating the cover design
Structuring text for readability
Developing design elements such as:
call-out boxes
layout hierarchy
simple visual summaries where appropriate
Revision Process
Please quote for the project as a fixed price, including:
Two rounds of design revisions prior to proofreading
One final round of changes after proofreading
The final deliverables should include:

Web-optimised PDF
Editable source file (Canva template or packaged InDesign file)
