PostGIS-ArcGIS Web Backend
Budget: $25 – $50 USD
We are building a parcel-level GIS web application that supports large-scale spatial screening and rule-based analysis using an ArcGIS front end and a custom backend.
ArcGIS is used for interactive mapping and visualization. All core data, spatial computation, and logic live in a PostgreSQL + PostGIS backend, exposed via APIs. The architecture is designed to scale to statewide datasets while minimizing reliance on ArcGIS Online for storage and compute.
This role focuses on backend spatial engineering, not desktop GIS or cartography.
What the user experience looks like (high level):
• User navigates a map and applies analysis presets.
• Parcels matching criteria are highlighted.
• Filters refine results using spatial and record-based rules.
• Clicking a parcel loads detailed attributes.
• On demand, the system generates and draws derived geometries (e.g. constraint-adjusted usable areas).
• Users can save parcels to lists and export data.
What you’ll be doing:
• Designing and working with PostGIS-backed spatial data models
• Ingesting and refreshing large GIS and property datasets
• Computing parcel-level spatial metrics (distance, overlap, percentages)
• Generating derived geometries (buffers, differences, constraint subtraction)
• Building JSON / GeoJSON APIs to support map interactions
• Integrating backend outputs with ArcGIS for highlighting and overlays
• Supporting scalable filtering, selection, and export workflows
Required experience:
• PostgreSQL + PostGIS
• Spatial indexing and geometry operations
• Python (FastAPI preferred) or Node.js
• GeoJSON-based APIs
• Experience integrating backends with ArcGIS or other web mapping platforms
Nice to have:
• Experience with Mapbox / MapLibre / Leaflet (in case we move this off Arcgis in future)
• ETL pipelines for large geospatial datasets
• Performance tuning for spatial queries
