PLC programmer

We are using plc to control an underwater vehicle. We have certain sensor values that have to be sent through a 232/485 data string to our survey department. For example our compass heading and depth. Am I relatively new to PLC programming and not familiar with collecting data an outputting on 232/485.
All the data is there, we just need to output it. We are using automation direct P1000.
