Troubleshoot and fix avatar upload issue with image upload feature

I have a preexisting social media site that features a large forum. Users create topics and discuss those topics in each forum thread. Users also have profiles and avatars. Currently, the avatar upload function is not working well. It's buggy and needs to be replaced with new code.
