Setup/configure MSSQL for PHP and Create a Connection File to Connect PHP to MSSQL Database

Hello, I have a Microsoft Server, and I want to build a PHP7 web app, using MS SQL database. But, I am having trouble creating the connection using php mssql_connect function:
"Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function mssql_connect() in C:\clnts\www"
I have also tried with sqlsrv function:
"Fatal error: Uncaught PDOException: could not find driver in C:\......\test.php:6 Stack trace: #0 C:\......\test.php(6): PDO->__construct() #1 {main} thrown in C:\......\test.php on line 6"
I need you to:
- Install/configure/enable PHP's MSSQL extensions (or equivalent) on the server
- Create a example connection script with PHP where you connect to database, and display rows form a table
The server has a Virtual Deskop/Remote Connection, no control panel.
Please only reply if you have dealt with this before. Let me know that you can start right away and that you have experience doing this to get considered first. Thanks for your bids.
