Optimize website and remove unnecessary file (including inodes) -- 2

My web hosting client has advised that I am currently using 340K inotes and have exceeded the limit of 100K inodes provided on my plan.
They have advised me that I need to OPTIMIZE my website & remove unnecessary files.
While this may be fixed, I am also keen to know what has caused this sudden increased usage when no new products have been added for about 2years now?
