Help creating dynamic product image on bigcommerce product page based on customer inputs

I am looking to dynamically update a product image on a product page based on customer inputs. Attached is a mockup of a simplified example of what I am looking to do. There are too many possible variations in my use case to use use product variant images.

I have seen references to rendering the image off-site based on user input values called via API and then displaying the image on the product page which sounds promising, but I am open to any approach that gets the job done.
