Help Us Speed Up Our Website -- 2

Hello, we have a website which is functioning very very slowly (always has done), and is almost unusable by today's standards.
We believe this is because there is a whole ton of unused code being loaded that doesn't need to be loaded.
And although we can use a simple and very much free solution of deleting this unused code with something like purifycss.online, we don't want to risk corruption anywhere on the site. So we are looking for an articulated hand in this.
There are also some occasional issues that may be part of the same problem, and that's some pages load some sort of default content over the intended content – as if the original build was initially cloned from another site and sometimes this content is loaded instead of the intentional content created. We currently remedy this by emptying the website's cache every month or so.
This is just a simple portfolio website so there's no need for SEO or anything like that. Load time is the only objective.
