Greatly Improve speed of wordpress site

We have a site that is listing information directly from an sql database running wordpress and is causing a lot of load issues doing this, we need it to be modified to work much smoother and quicker.
Some sort of method of syncing data from our mysql database to a json file and using that to list on the website will be the best but need to still keep all the dynamic features our website uses.
