Fix Search Error, add items from category to drop down menu

I have an immediate need for a web developer to address a problem with the search functionality on my website and expand the dropdown menu capabilities. The search comes up with a pop error saying no keywords entered. The drop down auto suggestions work, But when you put keywords in and hit enter or click submit. The pop up error says to enter keywords. This issue is only on desktop / pc. Search works fine on mobile.
The site uses smarty php with .tpl files and search shows drop down suggestions and shows results on a new page.
