Fetching a remote XML file and convert it to JSON with PHP

I got a XML file that i need to fetch and convert to JSON with PHP.
This can i make myselv. But the server has some type of protection so its not posible go grab the file by normal CURL / file_get_contents. But a site like convertcsv.io/products/xml2json can fetch it, so i guess its posible some how.

I cold use convertcsv but thats to slow and to exspensive.
