Create Error Handling for existing PHP application

We have A PHP application with a drop down (Item Number) to select items to print. We would like to add some JavaScript on the page to do two things when the selected or entered value does not match an available item in the list.
1. Display a warning on the page (prefer this to be directly above the data entry area)
2. Disable the "Submit" button
Once a value is entered that matches a value in the drop down, the warning message will go away and the submit button will be enabled.
