Field Photographer Needed to Document Market Stalls in Hanoi
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
Project Overview
We are an academic research team conducting a research project at Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi, Vietnam.
We are seeking a freelance photographer to document approximately 1,400 market stalls by taking standardized reference photographs for research purposes. This is a documentation project rather than a commercial or artistic photography assignment.
Scope of Work
The selected freelancer will:
• Photograph approximately 1,400 designated stalls at Dong Xuan Market.
• Work primarily on Floors 2 and 3 of the market building.
• Follow a list of stalls provided by the research team.
• Take one primary photograph of each designated stall.
Most stalls are located close to one another within the market building, allowing efficient movement throughout the site.
Photo Requirements
The purpose of the photographs is to document the current condition of each stall in a clear and consistent manner.
Each photo should clearly show:
• Store signboard
• Front display area
• Products being sold
• Overall stall boundaries and business type
Reference photos and detailed guidelines will be provided before the assignment begins.
Delivered photos should:
• Be taken from the front of the stall.
• Capture the entire storefront.
• Clearly show the signboard, display area, and products.
• Be sharp, well-lit, and in focus.
• Allow signs and displayed products to be identified when zoomed in.
• Clearly distinguish the photographed stall from neighboring stalls.
• Avoid prominently capturing the faces of sellers or customers whenever possible.
• Follow a consistent framing style across all stalls.
No advanced editing or retouching is required.

Proposed Project Period
The project is expected to take place between June 19 and June 21, 2026. Exact scheduling can be coordinated with the selected freelancer.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with field photography, site documentation, inspections, surveys, retail photography, or similar projects.
• Access to equipment capable of producing clear, high-resolution images.
• Compact cameras or lightweight photography equipment are required due to the crowded market environment.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain consistency across a large number of photographs.
• Availability during the proposed project period.
Collaboration
The freelancer will coordinate closely with members of the research team on-site to ensure that photographs are collected in accordance with the project requirements, photography guidelines, and quality standards established for the study.
Deliverables
The final deliverables should include:
• All original image files.
• Photos named according to stall identification numbers provided by the research team.
• Images organized according to project instructions.
• Delivery through Google Drive or another mutually agreed file-sharing platform.
To facilitate quality review and project tracking, interim uploads during the project may be requested by mutual agreement.
Quality Review
The research team will review submitted photographs against the agreed project requirements.
The freelancer may be asked to provide reasonable revisions or replacement photographs if deliverables do not meet the agreed standards regarding:
• Coverage
• Image quality
• Consistency with the provided guidelines
Intellectual Property and Confidentiality
Upon full payment, ownership of the project deliverables will transfer to the client in accordance with applicable Upwork Terms of Service.
The photographs are intended solely for the research project. The freelancer agrees not to publish, distribute, or otherwise use project photographs without prior written permission from the client.
