Calculating measurements on a photography

The requisite for this project is a solution to be able to calculate measurements on a photography taken with a mobile phone.
The picture should be taken over a white clean background so it lets to differentiate foreground or object against background.
The best solution will be the one that does not require the use of a caliper, scale or ruler in photography, just the object.
In a first phase it would be sufficient to calculate the measurements of the edges of an object. In later phases it could be considered to calculate measurements where a user marks start point and end point.
Initially should be a very basic solution.
